small sensory sillyness
More and more these days I have noticed that Rory has his own internal routine, that must not be broken. However we are trying to help him adjust it more to everyone elses. In recent days I have noticed that he has issues with commercials. Now I believe that it is because they tend to be louder then the actual program. Anyhow, this is generally what he does. turns his back to it and either covers his ears, or bites his nails. On this occasion, he chose nail biting. So to prevent this I have gone through the trouble of either putting on a dvd (no commercials) or turning the volume way down when commercials are coming up. I don't want him to think that they just don't exsist. So I am trying to help him cope and overcome it.

This looks great! How is it going? I have seen some people start a schedule like this with only four "icons" on it, then they gradually work up to more. Do you find he is more motivated to get his tasks done if he sees on the schedule that something he really likes is coming up?
The way Rory reacts to commercials reminds me of how my son reacts to TV. He watched LOTS of TV when he was young, then all of a sudden one day when he was 2 or 3 the show Arthur came on and he ran down the hall screaming! He wouldn't watch it again for several years after that. There was a time he couldn't watch any kids TV shows at all. He often runs out of (or into) the room depending what's on TV.
I have seen that Rory only seems toreact this way to commercials. But his sensory challenges are definitely starting to come out more. His older brother who is nearly 5 still has a few meltdowns a day, and when he does Rory hits him in the back of the head as if to tell him to stop...then rory begins to cry also. we are just trying to figure it all out. =)
